Review of The One And Only
From: GORDON LO, (glo@chat.carleton.ca)
CD cover design
- Even worse than True Man, though the theme is internet or
computer, there are no pictures related to this new technology.
Overview
-
The whole album is better than True Man and Refreshing Waves,
maybe better than Peace (for those who cannot accept rocks). Most
songs are o.k., but not many attractive songs.
[Songs : Graded on over 5 stars (*****), ***** for best while * for worst]
Track 1 ****
It is not a ordinary love song of Alan, I found it a bit strange at the first
Time, but I begin to like this song since the second time. The lyrics are
Wonderful, which especially for those in snowy countries.
Track 2 ****
It is one of the better fast songs of Alan in recent years, comparing to
"flying with me", "true lies","year 2048" and "the dreaming smile". It is
Quite commercial and talking about internet, really updated!
Track 3 *****
This is a song which you need to spend time on. The feeling is like
"the picture on the wall" (1987), really American style, a 'lum' song.
I really like this song, and this is the most "slow-heat" one in the
Album.
Track 4 *
Quite stupid! Even worse than the song "big talk street" in True man.
Although it is a new try of Alan, I believe than most Alan fans won't
Like it. Like "the signal of winter" (track 10, lorerei, 1986)
Track 5 **
No surprise and a really standard song. The melody sounds familiar.
Alan is performing well but CD voice doesn't. If Alan is not duet
With CD voice, the whole song might be better.
Track 6 ***
A traditional Alan love song, no surprise, but it is still valuable to Alan Fans. This is not a really "slow-heat" type of song, you should like it the first or second time you listen to it. But I think this song is a bit common.
Track 7 ***
Some people like it, some hate it. The first time I heard this song, I feel this song is similar to Track 3 in "Carnival". I don't like it either. But as I listen to it more, I begin to find this funky style interesting, a bit like Grasshopper's "Good Movie is at the end".
Track 8 ****
This is a very traditional TVB title song (80's). Something like Roman duet with Jenny, etc. You can imagine the screen of the TV while listening to this song, those guys are fighting with sword. But many people like this song very much, may be there is a
long time which they haven't heard this style of song. For my opinion, this song is quite nice, especially duet with Prsicilla Chan, not always Shirley Kwan.
Track 9 ***
It is a band-sound + mysterious mood song. Like a mixture of Shirley Kwan and Faye fast song style. Another new try of Alan. It is a good try, but traditional Alan Fans might not like it, as I still remember Alan's new try in "Temptation" (1988), also Tra
ck 9 : (False Excitement), not many Alan Fans like it.
Track 10 *****
A very commercial Alan Love song, written by a song writer in Taiwan. A nice beat and a nice lyric, I expect this song will hit. Many people consider this is the best song in this album, and I think this song might last for quite a long time.
Overall Comment :
- Again, definitely better than True Man, much more commercial than
Peace.
This time I would recommend 5 songs in this album :
Track 1, 2, 3, 8, 10.
Some
music samples are available from Alan's official page.
